Lawrence Stories in the Andover Newspapers of the 1800's

The following small selection of articles were abstracted from my Andover GenWeb Page which contains newspaper articles from the Andover Advertiser and Andover Townsman Newspapers. These stories were pulled out due to their relation to the city of Lawrence. I hope to add a great deal more newspaper stories from the Lawrence papers as time permits. 

 

Andover Advertiser Deaths : 

August 20, 1853:In Lawrence, Aug. 15th, Francis Clarke, son of Rev. George Packard, aged 7 months.

August 18, 1855:In Lawrence, 5th inst. Leonard, son of David and Nancy Pace, aged 37 years.

March 13, 1858:In Lawrence, March 5, Clara Grace, daughter of Henry and Mary W. Butman, 21 mos. 14 days.

May 8, 1858:In Lawrence, May 4th of consumption, Emma Eliza, daughter of the late Hermon Frye, 10 yrs. 7 mos.
May 5th, Ellen M., youngest daughter of Walter R. Mason, 18 years 11 mos.

October 23, 1858:In Lawrence, Oct 18th, George Wilson (twin) son of William P and Sarah E. Cooper, aged 1 yr and 17 days.

 

Andover Advertiser Marriages :

Saturday April 2, 1853: At Lawrence, 23rd inst. by Rev. J.G. Richardson, Dea. Edward E. Pratt, to Miss Izette E. Giles, both of Reading.

Saturday, May 6, 1854:In Andover, March 25th, by Rev. C.H. Pierce, Mr. George J. Edwards to Miss Elizabeth Kearney, both of Lawrence.

April 17, 1858:In Lawrence, April 1st, by Rev. Mr. Remington, Mr. Mark Bean to Miss Laura C. Smiley.

May 8, 1858: In Lawrence in the First Methodist Church April 18th, by Rev. W. McDonald, Mr. Edward H. Smith of Boston to Amanda S., daughter of William H. Bridgeman of Lawrence.
April 23rd, by Rev. Daniel Tenney, Mr. Henry F. Fisher of Lawrence to Miss Lucy Lovell of Yarmouth, ME.

October 15, 1859: At Lawrence, Oct 13, by Rev. Mr. Fisher, Mr. David P. Hazen to Miss Esther A. Howe, both of Andover.

 

NEWS FROM THE ADVERTISER:

 

November 17, 1855:
MAN MISSING - For several days no little anxiety has been felt by the friends of Mr. Sylvanus B. Faunce, the keeper of a boarding house on Lowell street, in this city. It appears that he was seen on Monday night between ten and eleven o'clock after the torch-light procession of the K.N.'s in which he had joined, had broken up, on his way home. Since that time no tidings have been received from him, and fears are entertained that he may have walked into the canal or met a worse fate at the hands of some villain unknown. - Lawrence Currier

 

January 5, 1856:
A daughter of Rev. Mr. Packard of Lawrence, aged 8 years, when on her way to school on Friday, slipped upon the ice and broke her leg below the knee.
 

April 3, 1858: BODY FOUND - The body of Dennis Decay, who had been missing for three months, was discovered floating in the canal at Lawrence a few days since. He was probably accidentally drowned.
 

January 5, 1856:
SHOCKING ACCIDENT 
Mrs. Dean of Lawrence, was thrown from a sleigh, and almost instantly killed. The Courier says she had been married about two months. Her husband and a lady in the sleigh with her were somewhat injured.
 

Andover Townsman Deaths :

October 5, 1888: In Lawrence, Sept. 30, Mrs. Ann Hogan, aged 83 years, formerly of North Andover.

March 22, 1889 : In Lawrence, March 20, Mr. Joseph Churchill, aged 63 years.

May 10, 1889:  In Lawrence, 59 Springfield St., of phthisis, Mrs. Catherine E. Clark, aged 41years, wife of Mr. Ed. E. Clark.

August 4, 1893
Irving M. Abbott, son of Edward Abbott of South Lawrence, and well known in this town, died at Kennebunkport, Monday night. He had been ill for a long time. Deceased was for a number of years, conductor on the Boston & Maine Railroad, and was a respected young man. He was 33 years old. Funeral services were held at the South Church yesterday afternoon, and the remains were buried in the cemetery of that Church.

December 2, 1887 : In Lawrence, Nov. 25, by Rev. J. M. Durell, Mr. Alexander Robinson of Lawrence and Miss Maggie Whitman of No., Andover.

August 2, 1889 : 
In Lawrence, July 26, in the United Presbyterian church, by Rev. Mr. McAyeal, Mr. William S. Porter of North Andover, and Miss Annie H. Buthbert of Lawrence.
 

Andover Townsman Crime Stories :

Friday November 25, 1887
John Howard, the Lawrence liquor dealer who has quite an Andover trade, was convicted at the Superior Court on Friday last on a charge of illegal selling, made by Chief of Police Cheever.

April 28, 1893
STOLE A CLOCK
Daniel Quigley of Lawrence was given two months in the house of correction, last Saturday, by Judge Poor for stealing a clock. Quigley was arrested in Lowell and brought to Andover Friday by Chief of Police Cheever. He was engaged as canvasser for the Donohoe installment house at Lawrence, and took a clock to sell at Ballardvale, but instead skipped and was not heard from until arrested. He said he pawned the clock.
