James Fleming

James Fleming Found in Coal Yard, Lifeless, This Morning

Taken from Lawrence Eagle Tribune January 30, 1905

James Fleming, aged 30 years, was found dead in Kress' coal office on Merrimack Street, Monday morning.  It is thought that he was frozen to death.

Phillip Cronin, one of Kress' employees, found the body in the office about 8 o'clock.  He notified George Bateman who telephoned to the police station.

Inspector Murphy and Medical Examiner Dow went to the office and found that the body was frozen stiff.  It was placed in charge of Conlin and Ryan.

Fleming worked for Kress at irregular intervals.  He had no home and was granted permission to sleep in the office.  An overturned chair was found in the office and the theory is advanced that Fleming fell from the chair and being in a helpless condition froze to death.

Fleming leaves three sisters in Lawrence, Mrs. J. Moolie, Mrs. Ryan and Mrs. Rowan.
