ISAAC TEWKSBURY: Born January 31, 1795 in Newbury, MA. Physician, surgeon. Resided and office located at 295 Essex St. Lawrence. Educated at Atkinson Academy and Hebron Academy, at Oxford, ME. Studied medicine with Dr. Robinson of Newbury, Dr. Tewksbury of Hebron, ME., Dr Little of Gloucester and Dr, Kittredge of Andover. Initially practiced medicine at Hampstead, NH for thirty years. Moved to Lawrence in 1847. Married to Sabra Foster in 1822 at Hudson, NH and married second wife, Harriet W. Smith, in 1859. He had six children. Was the oldest man in active business practice in Lawrence, having worked for a total of sixty-one years. ARTEMAS W. STEARNS : Born in Hill, NH in 1816, Mr. Stearns came to Lawrence in 1846, from Methuen. He was the first dry goods dealer in Lawrence, with a store located at 309 Essex Street. He was educated at Academies at New Market and Nashua, NH, he married Lydia Searles of Nashua, NH. They have no children and attended Central Congregational church. His dry goods store employed 75 people in various departments, the largest store in Essex County. He was also the president of Lawrence Savings Bank. JAMES DAY HERRICK : Born in Derry, NH on April 20, 1810, he has lived in Lawrence since it was founded. He attended school at South Reading, Philips Academy at Andover and Dartmouth College. He was a district school teacher until 1846, when he commenced taking toll at the Andover Bridge, where he was employed for twenty-two years. While he was employed at Andover Bridge, he was elected to multiple city positions, including Chief of Police and Board of School Committee. He was married to Louisa Robinson on May 17, 1848.
AARON ORDWAY : Born at Hebron, NH, May 4, 1814, Mr. Ordway came to Lawrence in 1847. He was an established businessman, owning an apothecary, and has a physician's practice. His father was a pioneer settler of Hebron, NH, and lived to be 93 years old. His uncle was John Ordway, the clerk and historian of the Lewis and Clark US Exploring Expedition. He had nothing more than a common education, but worked in the mercantile business, and only three years in medical practice. He was married two times and had four children.
ASA M. BODWELL : Owned the family estate containing 190 acres, including the city reservoir. resided at 589 Haverhill Street.
R. W. SPAULDING : Born in Wilton, NH in 1828, Captain Spaulding came to Lawrence in 1846 and began a clothing business. He was instrumental in building the Merrimack Valley Horse Railroad, was one the directors of the Lowell & Lawrence Railroad, and was also appointed one of the inspectors of the State Charitable Institutions of Paupers and Insane at Tewksbury. He was married to Mary A. Ham, a native of Rochester, NH.
STEPHEN P. SIMMONS : Born at Foster, RI., on April 17, 1813, married to Fannie B. Eldridge of South Harwich, MA. They had four children. He came to Lawrence April 1, 1847. HE was a stone builder and contractor, living at 175 Haverhill St. He helped build the damn across the Merrimack River and also the Grace Episcopal Church, among many other projects.
CHARLES STORER STORROW : Born at Montreal, March 25, 1809, came to Lawrence from Boston. Was instrumental in the initial phases of developing streets and surveying sites. He was a civil engineer by trade. Married to Lydia Cabot, had several children. Was the first mayor of Lawrence.
